In his speech to supporters in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, Trump repeatedly insulted Harris, criticising her for the influx of migrants into the United States and falsely blaming her for the situation. While it is not within Harris’s role as vice president to directly handle border security, Trump persistently targeted her for criticism.
Critics have pointed out that Trump’s language towards Harris was ableist, reflecting his biases and prejudices against people with disabilities. Maria Town, president and CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities, condemned Trump’s comments as harmful and called for political leaders to denounce such harmful language.
Town highlighted that several former presidents have had disabilities, demonstrating that disability does not diminish a person’s capacity for leadership. She emphasised that the presence or absence of a disability should not determine an individual’s suitability for holding public office.
During the rally, Trump also insulted Harris’s competence and character, continuing a pattern of personal attacks in his recent speeches.
