In a detailed three-page letter published in the Sunday Times, Duffield criticised Starmer’s decision to scrap winter fuel payments for pensioners and retain the controversial two-child benefit cap.
Duffield described Starmer’s policies as “cruel and unnecessary” and expressed concern that they negatively impact the party’s poorest and most vulnerable constituents. She also raised issues with Starmer’s treatment of fellow MP Diane Abbott and his lack of engagement with backbench MPs.
In her resignation letter addressed to Sir Keir, Duffield expressed her loss of confidence in the party’s direction under his leadership. She cited concerns about Starmer’s management style, lack of political instincts, and alleged nepotism within his inner circle. Duffield highlighted the importance of upholding Labour values and serving her constituents in Canterbury, emphasizing the need for social justice and support for those in need.
