125 Ukrainian drones reported in attack sparking fires across Russia, Moscow officials say

In a recent attack that has left a trail of destruction, more than 100 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Russia on Sunday, according to Moscow officials. This incident has sparked wildfires and caused an apartment block to catch fire, marking one of the largest barrages of drones over Russian skies since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that a total of 125 drones were shot down overnight across seven regions. Particularly heavy fire was reported in the southwestern region of Volgograd, with 67 Ukrainian drones intercepted by Russian air defenses. Falling debris from the drones damaged an apartment block and a private home in Voronezh, where 17 drones were seen.

Images circulating on social media depicted flames emerging from the windows of a high-rise building. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. In the Rostov region, 18 drones caused a wildfire due to falling debris, which covered an area of 20 hectares (49.4 acres) of forest. Emergency services are currently working to extinguish the blaze.

Simultaneously, in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, 13 civilians were injured during the overnight attacks. Ukrainian military leaders had previously warned of a potential new military offensive by Moscow in the region. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the damage caused by Russian aerial bombs to the city’s infrastructure and railway links. The attacks damaged several residential buildings and trapped individuals under the rubble. Emergency services are actively involved in clearing the debris.

As tensions escalate, the Ukrainian military reported that 22 Russian drones were launched overnight. Of these, 15 were shot down in various regions, and five were destroyed using electronic defenses. Further information on the fate of the remaining two drones has not been disclosed.

These recent developments have raised concerns about a potential escalation of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia. It is crucial for both sides to exercise restraint and seek diplomatic solutions to prevent further violence and civilian casualties. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and urging for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
