Dog and human brains have been discovered to sync up when they gaze into each other’s eyes, according to a recent study. The research suggests that during social interactions between people and their canine companions, their brain activity may become synchronised, particularly in the frontal lobe, indicating mutual attention.
A new study published in the journal Advanced Science revealed that mutual gazing between humans and dogs could lead to a similar synchronisation in the brain. Researchers found that petting also induced synchronisation in the parietal region, which is involved in attention. As dogs and their human companions bond and become more familiar, this synchronisation is believed to strengthen over time.
The study involved pairing 10 beagles with unfamiliar humans for five days and analyzing EEG brain signals from both parties. A control group of humans and dogs was also monitored in the same room without interacting for comparison. The findings showed that the synchronisation of brain activity increased as the human-dog bond grew stronger.
Studies have previously identified human brain regions that are activated during interactions with pets, indicating emotional engagement. This recent study marks the first time such synchronisation has been observed in a dog’s brain. Researchers highlighted that certain genetic mutations in dogs could lead to social impairment symptoms resembling autism spectrum disorder, causing a loss of brain activity synchronisation and reduced attention during interactions.
Moreover, the study suggested that a single LSD treatment might reverse abnormal brain activities in dogs with such mutations. The research also indicated that disrupted interbrain synchronisation could potentially serve as a biomarker for autism. The implications of these findings suggest that LSD or its derivatives could help alleviate social symptoms associated with autism.
The study’s authors from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing emphasised the significance of these discoveries in understanding the bond between humans and dogs, shedding light on potential treatment avenues for conditions affecting social behaviours.
