Global Citizen CEO taps into Generation Z’s sense of urgency

Global Citizen CEO, Hugh Evans, emphasises the importance of nurturing the sense of urgency that younger generations, particularly Generation Z, bring to solving international challenges. Evans highlights historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, who initiated significant movements at a young age, underscoring the impact of youth-driven activism.

In a recent interview with the Associated Press prior to the Global Citizen Festival in New York, Evans expressed the need to embrace the energy and commitment of the youth in addressing pressing global issues. The festival, featuring renowned artists like Post Malone and Doja Cat, raised over $1 billion in commitments to combat extreme poverty and introduced a partnership with FIFA to incentivize Global Citizen supporters through match tickets for humanitarian actions.

Evans highlighted the current global landscape marked by persistent shocks from the pandemic, escalating conflicts, and the looming threat of climate change leading to an increase in global poverty. He urged supporters to advocate for critical causes such as fully funding the World Bank’s International Development Association, halting drilling activities in the Amazon, and raising funds to provide education for millions of children affected by conflict.

With a strong focus on engaging Generation Z, Evans revealed that over 70% of Global Citizen supporters belong to this demographic. The organisation aims to empower young people by providing them with accessible platforms for activism and advocacy, underpinned by well-researched policy initiatives to drive meaningful change. The approach seeks to equip the youth with effective tools to eradicate extreme poverty globally.

Global Citizen’s efforts in mobilising the younger generation reflect a strategic alignment with the evolving landscape of social activism, encouraging proactive participation in shaping a better future. As the world grapples with multifaceted challenges, the emphasis on harnessing the passion and determination of Generation Z underscores a shift towards inclusive and impactful global initiatives.
