Vice President Kamala Harris took a bold step by airing a TV ad aimed at pressuring former President Donald Trump into accepting another debate while he was enjoying a college football game between Alabama and Georgia. The 30-second ad, which aired during the game, delivered a strong message, stating, “Winners never back down from a challenge. Champions know it’s anytime, anyplace. But losers, they whine and waffle and take their ball home.”
The ad featured a clip of Trump missing a putt on the golf course before cutting to Harris confidently addressing him on stage, “Well, Donald, I do hope you’ll reconsider to meet me on the debate stage. If you’ve got something to say, say it to my face.” Despite plans to fly a banner reading “Trump’s Punting on 2nd Debate” over Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, bad weather intervened, and the plan had to be cancelled.
During a campaign event in Charlotte, North Carolina, Harris emphasised the importance of another debate, stating, “I believe we owe it to the voters to have another debate because this election and what is at stake could not be more important.” Trump, who has been hesitant to engage in another debate with Harris, had claimed victory in their previous encounter in September, although many, including some of his own aides, considered Harris the winner on that occasion.
In response to the TV ad, a Trump campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, remarked, “Kamala Harris would never show up to a sporting event like this [Alabama-Georgia] because she’d get booed out of the stadium and embarrass herself.” The Independent reached out to the Trump campaign for a comment on the matter.
The ongoing tension between Harris and Trump comes amid Harris launching the ad while Trump was at Bryant-Denny Stadium watching the intense Alabama-Georgia football game. With Harris consistently pushing for another debate, the dynamics of their potential rematch continue to draw attention and speculation.
