Norway is considering the construction of a fence along its border with Russia, taking a cue from its neighbouring country, Finland. The proposal involves the possibility of erecting a fence along part or all of the 123-mile border shared between Norway and Russia. This initiative is inspired by Finland’s decision to implement a similar project in response to security concerns.
Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl expressed interest in the idea of a border fence, highlighting its potential as a deterrent and its ability to incorporate advanced sensors and technology for border surveillance. The Norwegian government is currently evaluating various security measures to enhance border security in the Arctic north, including the option of fencing, increasing border staff numbers, or enhancing monitoring capabilities.
The only official crossing point into Norway from Russia is the Storskog border station, which has experienced few illegal border crossing attempts in recent years. Enger Mehl stated that if the security situation in the Arctic region deteriorates, the Norwegian government is prepared to swiftly close the border. This stance was influenced by Finland’s decision to close all crossing points from Russia following a significant influx of third-country migrants without proper documentation.
In light of Finland’s actions, the Finnish-Russian land border is undergoing the construction of fences equipped with advanced surveillance equipment to better monitor and control border crossings. This initiative aims to prevent the exploitation of migrants in what Finland terms as Russia’s “hybrid warfare.” Encouraged by Finland’s approach, Norway is considering the implementation of a similar fence along its border with Russia for enhanced security measures.
The Storskog border station in Norway currently features a 200-meter long and 3.5-meter high fence constructed in 2016, following a previous influx of migrants and asylum-seekers from Russia. The potential for extending fencing measures along the Norway-Russia border is being seriously contemplated by authorities in both countries. The prospect of introducing fences with top-notch surveillance technology as a means to bolster border security remains under active consideration.
