A newly upgraded gymnasium has been officially unveiled for submariners at Faslane, giving the physical training staff at the base two reasons to celebrate. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Naval Base Commander Clyde, Commodore Sharon Malkin, marking the opening of the renovated SASH Gymnasium within the Sportsdrome facility. The revamp, spearheaded by Warrant Officer Physical Trainer (WOPT) Vercoe, was made possible with £400,000 funding from OP HIND – the Royal Navy’s Human Performance team on behalf of Director Submarines. Renamed as “The Trident Gym,” the facility aims to support military personnel in enhancing their health, wellbeing, and fitness levels, encouraging a sustainable exercise routine.
The newly refurbished gym boasts dedicated areas for boxing, strength conditioning, and functional fitness, catering to the needs of Submarine Qualifying Course (SMQ) students to help them stay physically and mentally prepared for their duties. Following the gym’s official opening, Commodore Malkin presented Leading Physical Trainer (LPT) Lavender with the prestigious Herbert Lott Award. This accolade acknowledges LPT Lavender’s exceptional leadership and organisational skills, particularly evident during HM Naval Base Clyde’s Families’ Day earlier in the year.
LPT Lavender played a pivotal role in coordinating various activities for Royal Navy families and the wider community during Families’ Day, including a petting zoo, bird of prey display, climbing wall, bouncy castle, and displays from 43 Commando and local emergency services. His meticulous planning, attention to detail, and flawless execution exemplified his eligibility for the Herbert Lott Award, recognising his outstanding contributions to the event.
The gym’s unveiling and the award presentation exemplify the commitment and dedication of the physical training staff at Faslane towards promoting the health and fitness of submariners, ensuring they are well-prepared for their roles. The upgraded facility, along with the well-deserved recognition of LPT Lavender’s efforts, showcase the ongoing efforts within the naval base to provide support and resources for the personnel stationed there.
