A Scottish mother has shared her inspiring journey of overcoming addiction and completely transforming her life. Catrina Slavin, aged 41, successfully battled alcoholism and is now three years sober. After quitting drinking, Catrina made significant changes in her life by switching careers, establishing a support group, and launching a podcast focused on addiction support.
Hailing from Blantyre, Catrina reflected on her teenage years when she first started drinking with friends. She realised that her problems with alcohol began early on as she consistently found herself binge drinking and struggling to control her consumption. Despite not fitting the typical stereotypes of alcoholism, Catrina recognised the hold alcohol had on her life.
In September 2021, Catrina made the pivotal decision to attend a 12-step recovery program to address her addiction issues. Quietly committing herself to sobriety, she embarked on a journey of self-improvement by prioritising her physical and mental well-being. Embracing activities such as hillwalking and dedicating herself to helping others, Catrina turned her life around.
Following a year of sobriety, Catrina initiated recovery groups in her community and launched a podcast called “Binge with Catrina” that explores various aspects of addiction. Transitioning from a job she despised in a call centre, she now works full-time supporting young individuals aged 13-25 struggling with addiction. Catrina is also a certified Recovery Rhythms coach, using music and movement for healing.
Expressing her contentment with her current life, Catrina shared her joy and enthusiasm for each day. Reflecting on her journey to sobriety, she acknowledged the initial challenges of admitting her struggles and the stigma attached to addiction, especially as a mother. Catrina’s openness about her recovery journey has inspired others to seek help without shame.
Catrina’s story serves as a testament to the transformative power of recovery and the importance of seeking support. For those struggling with alcohol addiction, resources like the Central and Local Alcohol and Drug Recovery Services can provide the necessary assistance. Catrina’s message resonates with courage, resilience, and the belief that it is never too late to embark on a path to healing and redemption.
