‘SNL skewers Trump and ‘bad’ pick JD Vance over campaign lies in hilarious Cold Open’

In the latest episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL), James Austin Johnson brought back his portrayal of Donald J Trump and took a dig at the former president’s choice of running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance. Johnson’s Trump character joked about Vance being a “bad pick,” setting the satirical tone for the sketch. The role of JD Vance was played by Bowen Yang, who enthusiastically embraced the comedic banter by remarking, “JD, you’re like a son to me, because I don’t like you. I’m stuck with you.”

The sketch didn’t hold back in poking fun at the Republican nominee, especially targeting Vance’s recent controversial comments about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, which were debunked by city officials. Johnson’s Trump character exaggerated Vance’s remarks, claiming that Haitian immigrants were “eating the dogs” and engaging in bizarre activities with pets. The skit also took a swipe at false claims made by Trump regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity.

The episode also featured Maya Rudolph portraying Vice President Kamala Harris, Andy Samberg as her husband Douglas Emhoff, and Dana Carvey as President Joe Biden. Rudolph’s Harris character expressed gratitude towards her husband and Carvey’s Biden character in a light-hearted exchange. The comedic delivery of the Cold Open resonated with viewers, showcasing SNL’s ability to infuse current political commentary with humour.

As SNL continues to captivate audiences with its satirical portrayals of political figures, the Cold Open segment serves as a reminder of the show’s knack for blending comedy with social commentary. The skit’s playful jabs at Trump, Vance, and other prominent political figures add a light-hearted touch to the often serious landscape of American politics. SNL’s ability to entertain and enlighten viewers through humour remains a hallmark of the show’s enduring popularity.
