The recent terrible election defeat of the Tories has been attributed to their own actions, according to a warning from Ben Houchen. The Mayor of Teesside, who is currently the only senior Tory holding power, expressed his belief that the Conservative party could turn things around in five years. However, he cautioned against attempting to emulate Reform in order to achieve this turnaround.
In an exclusive interview with The Independent ahead of the Tory party conference in Birmingham, Lord Houchen reflected on the election outcome where the Tories suffered a historic low with only 121 MPs. Having previously supported Boris Johnson’s return as prime minister and later distanced himself from Rishi Sunak, the former prime minister’s analysis was acknowledged by Houchen as correct, although he noted that people had ceased listening to it.
While Labour faces challenges related to policies and internal issues, Lord Houchen emphasised that the Tories must take responsibility for losing the election. He highlighted that the voters’ primary aim was to oust the Tories rather than enthusiastically support Labour. Lord Houchen stressed the need for the Conservative party to rebuild trust with the public over the years leading up to the next election.
Reflecting on Rishi Sunak’s warnings, Lord Houchen admitted that ignoring these warnings had contributed to the party’s electoral defeat. He praised Sunak’s competency and leadership qualities, suggesting that he could have been a successful prime minister under different circumstances. Lord Houchen also pointed out that the party’s lack of listening to Sunak’s insights had led to a disconnect with voters.
Regarding the party’s future direction, Lord Houchen cautioned against simplistic decisions to mimic Reform or align more closely with the Lib Dems. He suggested that the party needed to rediscover its conservative values and differentiate itself from other political movements. Additionally, he agreed with the idea of reviewing the UK’s relationship with the European Convention of Human Rights, echoing sentiments expressed by some leadership contenders.
As the Tory party navigates through its post-election challenges, Lord Houchen stressed the importance of selecting the right leader, implementing effective policies, and rebuilding trust with the public. He acknowledged the significant amount of work ahead for the Conservatives in regaining public confidence and support.
