A Utah mother battling terminal cancer has made the heartbreaking decision to plan her own funeral after doctors gave her a prognosis of just three months to live. Erika Diarte-Carr, aged 30, shared on her GoFundMe page that she has been fighting Stage 4 small-cell lung carcinoma for the past two years and has now been told that no further treatments would be effective in prolonging her life.
Following an oncologist appointment on 18 September where she received the terminal diagnosis, Erika decided to use her remaining time to ensure her children and loved ones would be taken care of after she is gone. She expressed her determination to make the best of the precious time she has left with her two young children, Jeremiah aged 7 and Aaliyah aged 5.
Erika originally set a goal of raising $5,000 to cover the expenses of her funeral service, but the response from the public has been overwhelming. More than 30,000 donors have generously contributed to her cause, raising an astounding $900,000. Speaking to ABC News, Erika expressed her shock and gratitude at the unexpected outpouring of support, far surpassing her initial expectations.
Grateful for the generosity shown by strangers, Erika plans to secure her children’s future by placing the majority of the donations into a trust fund for Jeremiah and Aaliyah. Describing her children as her “whole life, light, and soul,” she expressed her deep appreciation for the love and assistance she has received during this challenging time.
Erika recounted how her life changed dramatically on 7 May 2022 when what seemed like a routine visit to the emergency room for a shoulder injury led to the devastating diagnosis of cancer. The doctor’s words warning her of the arduous journey ahead continued to resonate in her mind as she grappled with the reality of her condition and its impact on her life and family.
Complications arose when Erika was diagnosed with Cushing’s syndrome on 17 January 2024, exacerbating her health challenges with symptoms including rapid weight gain, high blood pressure, muscle and bone deterioration, among others. Despite the difficulties, she persevered, continuing to work full-time and caring for her children with the support of her dedicated medical team.
As she faces the difficult road ahead, Erika remains grateful for the outpouring of kindness and financial assistance that will provide security for her children’s future.
