A man has been found guilty in connection to the killing of renowned Rio de Janeiro councilwoman Marielle Franco. The convicted individual, Edilson Barbosa dos Santos, has been sentenced to five years in prison for impeding the investigation into the assassination of Franco. This marks the first conviction related to the 2018 fatal shooting of Franco, a prominent figure as the only Black woman serving on the council and as a bisexual.
Dos Santos was implicated in the case for allegedly dismantling a car that was used in the drive-by shooting. The Rio de Janeiro state court confirmed his conviction on Monday. Meanwhile, former police officer Ronnie Lessa has admitted to the murder of Franco as part of a plea deal, but he is yet to receive sentencing.
In another development, federal lawmaker Chiquinho Brazão and his brother Domingos Brazão were taken into custody in March on suspicion of being behind the order to kill Franco. Both have links to criminal gangs, specifically militias that extort residents for various services. They have denied any involvement in Franco’s murder.
