Annandale Speakers Kick Off New Season
In Dumfries, the Annandale Speakers club commenced their new season with a captivating evening that left the audience thoroughly entertained. President David Logan set the stage by passing the gavel to Bruce Edensor, who took on the role of Mr. Speaker for the evening.
The event featured a lineup of speakers who delivered engaging talks. Robert Jardine delved into the history of horse racing, particularly focusing on the early years when only owner riders weighing 168lbs were allowed to compete, ensuring fairness in the sport. Following that, Phil Kenyon shared insights into profitable betting strategies, despite not being a gambler himself, showcasing his sharp analytical skills.
John Kerr took the audience on a journey back in time, recounting anecdotes of local businessmen who outwitted bookies half a century ago, leading to jubilant celebrations. The second half of the event saw Topics Master John Robson challenging speakers like Frank Farrell, Joe Glass, David Hudson, and George Gilhooligan on a range of topics from the Commonwealth Games to the importance of a good night’s sleep.
Ken Morland’s discussion on Greek Fire, an ancient incendiary weapon, took an unexpected turn when he revealed it served as a practice speech for a wedding. Godfry Newham reflected on his childhood fascination with language and its nuances, emphasizing the richness of communication while also warning about its complexities.
John Reid injected humour into the evening by blending cricket terminology with modern management jargon, leaving the audience in stitches with his witty anecdotes. The event’s critic found themselves perplexed by the eclectic mix of topics and entertainment, seeking solace in counselling.
