Diego Simeone has called for consequences for those Atletico Madrid fans who disrupted the Madrid derby against Real Madrid, by throwing objects at goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The match was momentarily suspended as a result of the incident, which saw items being hurled towards Courtois by fans from the Atletico ultras section of the stadium.
Eder Militao’s goal for Real Madrid prompted the unsavoury behaviour from the home fans, leading to a brief pause in the game as players left the pitch for safety. At that moment, Simeone and Atletico captain Koke intervened, appealing to the ultras to cease their actions so that the match could resume. Ultimately, Atletico managed to salvage a draw with Angel Correa netting an equaliser in the 96th minute.
Following the match, Simeone expressed that those responsible for such incidents should face repercussions from the club, stressing that the support of fans is crucial without the need for disruptive behaviour. The Atletico manager also suggested that Courtois may have played a role in provoking the situation by celebrating towards the ultras after the goal, cautioning players to be mindful of their actions.
Atletico Madrid released a statement indicating that one of the fans involved has been identified, and they are working in collaboration with the authorities to identify others for disciplinary action. The club emphasised that such behaviour has no place in football and tarnishes the image of the stadium and its supporters, the vast majority of whom displayed exemplary conduct throughout the match.
Simeone’s remarks underscore the need for accountability not only from fans who engage in misconduct but also from players who may instigate or exacerbate such situations through their actions or gestures. The call for sanctions aimed at both parties seeks to promote a culture of respect and sportsmanship within the footballing community, discouraging unsportsmanlike conduct and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all involved.
The incident at the Madrid derby serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining decorum and mutual respect in sports, highlighting the impact that inflammatory behaviour can have on the game, its participants, and the broader fan base. As the authorities continue their investigation and enforcement of disciplinary measures, the focus remains on upholding the values of fair play and camaraderie that are integral to the spirit of football.
