Dunblane teenager, Jamie Oldham, has recently completed a remarkable sporting marathon challenge in aid of a fundraiser for Malawi. The event, organised by the local Boys Brigade, aims to support the village of Likhubula in Malawi, with whom Dunblane has had a close relationship for almost two decades.
On a single day, Jamie covered a near-triple marathon distance of 75 miles by participating in three different sports – rowing, cycling, and tennis. The sponsored challenge took place at Dunblane Sports Club, where Jamie started at 7am and finished at 9pm, burning an impressive 9,000 calories in the process. He was supported by transatlantic rower Elaine Hopley and tennis coach Sandy Fleming.
The goal of the fundraising was to raise £21,000 to ensure that all team members selected for the Malawi trip could participate regardless of their financial means. The partnership with Likhubula has led to funding sustainable projects that aim to enhance the lives of the village residents.
To continue the fundraising efforts, 25 Junior Section members in Dunblane will be engaging in cycling challenges throughout October to raise funds for fertiliser and food aid in Likhubula during the winter months. Additionally, a Coffee Morning and a Soup & Sweet Lunch will be hosted in Dunblane Cathedral Hall over the weekend to further support the cause.
The commitment and dedication shown by Jamie and the Boys Brigade in Dunblane reflect a strong sense of community spirit and a willingness to make a positive impact on the lives of others. The ongoing efforts to support the village of Likhubula exemplify the power of collective action in creating meaningful change and fostering global connections.
