An ex-Dallas police officer, Amber Guyger, who fatally shot a Black man in his own home after mistaking it for her own, is now eligible for parole. Guyger, who was convicted in 2019 and sentenced to 10 years in prison for the shooting of Botham Jean, has served five years of her sentence, making her eligible for parole, as confirmed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
The tragic incident occurred when Guyger, still in uniform, entered Jean’s apartment, which was located directly above her own, and shot him while he was innocently eating ice cream. Jean, an accountant from St. Lucia, was unarmed at the time of the shooting. Despite her conviction, Guyger now has the opportunity for parole, coincidentally on what would have been Jean’s 33rd birthday.
Botham’s mother, Allison Jean, has voiced her disapproval of Guyger’s potential early release, insisting that Guyger should serve her full 10-year sentence. She emphasised the pain and hurt that Guyger had caused her family and stressed the importance of justice for her son, who was killed in his own home.
The shooting of Botham Jean in September 2018 sparked widespread protests in Dallas. Guyger had initially claimed that she mistook Jean’s apartment for her own, even though she was off-duty with a non-functioning body camera at the time. Despite her attempts to appeal the conviction, Guyger lost her appeal two years ago and has since been serving her sentence.
As Guyger now becomes eligible for parole, the parole board will review her case, considering any changes she has undergone and the impact of her actions. Former parole officer and University of Texas Arlington professor Zerita Hall explained the parole process, noting that letters from Botham’s family would be evaluated during the hearing, emphasising the importance of keeping Guyger in prison for the murder she committed.
