‘He’s lying’: Biden hits back at Trump on storm Helene as he announces plans for surveying damage

President Joe Biden has vehemently refuted false accusations made by Donald Trump regarding the response to Hurricane Helene, as he outlined plans to assess the damage caused by the storm. Trump baselessly claimed on social media that Biden and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper were neglecting areas affected by the hurricane. The former president alleged that support was being withheld from Republican regions hit by the storm, despite the widespread devastation and loss of life in the Tar Heel state.

During a briefing in the Oval Office with Governor Cooper and Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator Deanne Criswell, Biden responded to Trump’s claims, labelling them as lies. Biden stated that Governor Cooper had affirmed to him that the accusations made by Trump were false, expressing his frustration at the misinformation being spread. He emphasised the importance of accurately communicating the support being provided to those affected by the disaster, dismissing Trump’s unfounded allegations.

Biden announced his intention to visit North Carolina on Wednesday to personally survey the damage caused by Hurricane Helene. He had postponed the trip to ensure that resources crucial for response and recovery efforts were not diverted. Efforts were underway to deliver essential supplies to stranded residents in severely affected areas, with some mountainous communities receiving aid by air. The government and aid organisations were working tirelessly to provide assistance to those in need across the storm-ravaged areas.

The President affirmed that the administration was fully committed to supporting the affected communities and debunked any suggestions that aid was being selectively distributed based on political affiliations. Biden’s response to Trump’s unfounded claims underscored the government’s dedication to providing relief and assistance to all those impacted by the disastrous effects of Hurricane Helene.
