Levels of homelessness in Dumfries and Galloway have seen a decrease in the year 2023/24, according to new data. The latest figures reveal that the council managed 1,157 homelessness applications during this period, which is 98 fewer than the previous year. Out of these applications, 841 resulted in individuals being identified as homeless or at risk of homelessness, a reduction of 154 cases compared to the previous year. Additionally, the number of children associated with these applications was 273, showing a decrease of almost a third from the previous year.
Earlier in the year, the council had declared a housing emergency due to over 1,000 households living in conditions deemed “below tolerable standard” and more than 500 open homeless applications on record. Across Scotland, the total number of homelessness applications increased from 39,308 in the previous year to 40,685 in 2023/24. Successful applications numbered 33,619, representing an increase of over 1,000 from the previous year.
The reduction in homelessness applications in Dumfries and Galloway is a positive development for the region, indicating progress in addressing housing challenges and supporting vulnerable individuals and families.
