Most accurate ultrasound test ‘can detect 96% of women with ovarian cancer’

A groundbreaking study has revealed that the most accurate ultrasound test can detect a staggering 96% of ovarian cancers in postmenopausal women. The study compared various diagnostic tests currently available for identifying the condition, with one particular ultrasound protocol proving to be significantly more sensitive than others.

The IOTA ADNEX ultrasound model, which focuses on the visual appearance of lumps in ultrasounds, emerged as the top performer among the six tests examined. This model demonstrated an impressive accuracy rate of 96% in detecting ovarian cancer, outshining the current standard of care in the UK.

Led by Professor Sudha Sundar from the University of Birmingham, the research team asserts that the findings advocate for the replacement of the current standard of care test in the UK, known as the risk of malignancy (RMI1) test, which currently identifies only 83% of ovarian cancers.

While the increased accuracy of the ultrasound test may lead to some false positives, the experts emphasise the overall benefit of detecting more women with cancer early on. Professor Sundar highlighted the significance of the study, stating, “This is the first time that a head-to-head study of all available ovarian cancer tests have been done in the same population.”

Annwen Jones, chief executive at Target Ovarian Cancer, stressed the importance of early diagnosis in ovarian cancer treatment success. She expressed optimism about the research findings indicating more effective ways of using ultrasound for detection.

The research team underscored the essential role of appropriately trained NHS sonographers in achieving the high accuracy rates of the IOTA ADNEX model. The study has been published in the prestigious Lancet Oncology journal, marking a significant advancement in the field of ovarian cancer diagnosis and treatment.

As discussions around implementing this innovative ultrasound model progress, there is a growing call for increased awareness of ovarian cancer symptoms to prompt women to seek timely testing and treatment. The potential impact of these findings on improving patient outcomes underscores the importance of swift adoption of new diagnostic approaches like the IOTA ADNEX ultrasound protocol.
