Robert Jenrick, a Tory leadership frontrunner, has called for the Star of David to be displayed at every point of entry to the UK as a symbol of solidarity with Israel. Speaking at an event organised by the Conservative Friends of Israel, Jenrick expressed his desire for the UK to be the most welcoming country for Israelis and the Jewish community.
During his time as immigration minister, Jenrick advocated for Israelis to be able to use e-gates when travelling to Britain. He emphasised the importance of having the Star of David prominently featured at every airport and entry point into the country to demonstrate support for Israel.
At the event, Jenrick made a bold statement by wearing a black hoodie with the words “Hamas Are Terrorists” emblazoned on it. He further pledged that if he were to become prime minister, he would personally oversee the relocation of the British embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a move that has faced previous opposition but remains a point of contention.
In his address, Jenrick reiterated his vision for the UK to extend a warm welcome to Israelis, highlighting the symbolic significance of displaying the Star of David at all entry points. He affirmed his commitment to strengthening the bond between the UK and Israel by ensuring a hospitable environment for Israeli citizens.
Shadow foreign secretary Andrew Mitchell, also present at the event, condemned the use of terms like genocide and apartheid in reference to the Middle East situation. He cautioned against the escalation of rhetoric and emphasised the need for reasoned debate and understanding in discussing the complexities of the region.
The call for the Star of David to mark UK entry points reflects Jenrick’s stance on fostering closer ties with Israel and underlines his dedication to creating a welcoming environment for the Jewish community. As the debate around Israel and its relations with other nations continues, Jenrick’s proposal adds a new dimension to the ongoing discussions regarding foreign policy and international relations.
