Actor JJ Velazquez, known for his role in the film Sing Sing, has been freed from a wrongful murder conviction after spending 23 years behind bars. Velazquez, whose real name is Jon-Adrian Velazquez, was wrongfully convicted in 1998 for the murder of a retired New York police officer, Inga Parkel. After nearly 24 years in prison, he has been exonerated by a Manhattan judge.
The emotional moment of Velazquez’s exoneration was captured as he embraced friends and family outside the courthouse. In a powerful statement to the press, Velazquez expressed his feelings, stating, “I was kidnapped by this country and enslaved. This is not a celebration. This is an indictment of the system.” Velazquez, aged 48, had been serving a sentence of 25 years to life despite not matching the description of the suspect at the time of the crime.
Velazquez’s story gained national attention when it was featured on NBC’s Dateline in 2002, leading to further investigations into his case. After new physical evidence came to light a decade later, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Unit revisited the case but initially found insufficient evidence to prove Velazquez’s innocence.

In a significant turn of events in August 2021, Velazquez was granted executive clemency by then-New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Throughout his time in incarceration, Velazquez managed to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree in Behavioral Science from Mercy College. He has since become an advocate for criminal legal reform. President Joe Biden even issued an apology to Velazquez during a criminal legal reform forum in October 2022.
