Military officials have recently unveiled a concerning video capturing a Russian fighter jet flying dangerously close to a U.S. Air Force F-16 near Alaska. The footage, made public on Monday, shows the Russian aircraft swiftly passing by the U.S. jet, with only a few feet of space separating the two planes.
This incident occurred on September 23, as the U.S. pilot was directed by the North American Aerospace Defense Command to intercept the Russian jet. It follows a series of Russian activities within the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone, which lies just beyond U.S. sovereign airspace.
Gen. Gregory Guillot, the commander of NORAD and U.S. Northern Command, condemned the unsafe and unprofessional behaviour of the Russian Su-35. He emphasised that such actions endangered all involved and were not characteristic of a professional air force. The NORAD aircraft, in contrast, executed a safe and disciplined manoeuvre during the interception.
The release of this video comes in the wake of multiple instances of Russian military and navy vessels approaching Alaska, including joint exercises with China. Though these encounters did not breach U.S. airspace, they have prompted responses such as the deployment of U.S. soldiers with mobile rocket launchers to Shemya Island.
U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, highlighted the significance of bolstering America’s military presence in Alaska and the Arctic region following this incident. He underscored that the aggressive actions by Russian fighter pilots jeopardised the safety of U.S. Airmen and underscored the escalating aggression displayed by leaders such as Vladimir Putin.
In a statement, Sen. Sullivan stressed the need to counter such recklessness and unprofessionalism, affirming the necessity of strengthening U.S. defence capabilities in response to such behaviour. This latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the tensions and risks inherent in geopolitical interactions between nations.
