Tottenham Hotspur has strongly condemned the “abhorrent, unacceptable” homophobic chanting from some of their fans during the recent victory over Manchester United. The club has vowed to take the “strongest possible action” against anyone found to be involved in such behaviour.
The incident occurred as Spurs secured a 3-0 win against the Red Devils, with a standout performance on the pitch overshadowed by the homophobic slurs from a section of the away supporters. The chanting, believed to be directed at Dominic Solanke – who scored the third goal – was deemed offensive and inappropriate by the club.
In an official statement, Tottenham Hotspur expressed their disapproval of the homophobic chanting, stating, “This is simply unacceptable, hugely offensive and no way to show support for the team.” The club also mentioned that they will collaborate with the authorities to identify those responsible and take appropriate action as per their Sanctions and Banning Policy.
Moreover, the club reiterated their commitment to creating an inclusive environment for all fans, including those from the LGBTQ+ community. Tottenham Hotspur acknowledged the importance of eradicating discrimination of any kind and emphasised the need for all supporters to uphold the values of respect and inclusivity.
The supporters’ association, Proud Lilywhites, also condemned the chants, highlighting that such behaviour hinders efforts to foster a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. They asserted, “When you sing these songs, you’re telling us we don’t belong; and we do, as much as you do.”
This incident is not isolated, as previous instances of homophobic abuse in football have led to fines and bans. Last year, Wolves and Luton were penalised for similar behaviour, with a Manchester United fan receiving a banning order for shouting homophobic slurs at opposition fans.
