Earth Acquires New ‘Mini-Moon’
The Earth has recently gained a new temporary satellite, typically referred to as a mini-moon, which is set to depart by the end of November. Measuring just 10 metres across, this new satellite is a rare occurrence, highlighting the advancements in astronomy and the bustling nature of space.
This new mini-moon, identified as 2024 PT5, is actually an asteroid believed to originate from the Arjuna asteroid group, located approximately 100 million miles from the Sun with similar orbits. Despite being small and dark, making it challenging to observe when far from Earth, it poses no threat to our planet. Its orbit will follow a horseshoe shape around the Earth before venturing back into outer space.
The term “mini-moon” is used for asteroids or comets that are temporarily bound by Earth’s gravity, analogous to the Moon we see every night. Unlike the larger moons in our solar system, mini-moons are small and transitory, often departing shortly after arrival. While some temporary satellites can be artificial, like space debris captured by a planet’s gravity, natural mini-moons are a captivating astronomical phenomenon.
Previous instances of mini-moons include the discovery of 2022 NX1 a couple of years ago, with estimations suggesting it was captured in 1981 and will return in 2051. In 2002, a mini-moon claim was debunked as part of a Saturn V rocket from the Apollo program. Since the first observation in 1991, scientists have recorded a total of five mini-moons, recognising the difficulty in distinguishing them from other space debris.
As technology advances and observation methods improve, it is likely that more mini-moons will be detected in the future. These miniature satellites, though fleeting, provide valuable insights into the dynamics of Earth’s interaction with celestial bodies in space, enhancing our understanding of the universe.
