In a heartwarming display of resilience and passion, a blind pianist from Nagaland, Takosangba Jamir, shared that music has been the beacon of light that has kept him going. Although he lost his vision at the age of 14, Jamir believes that music has played a significant role in shaping his perspective and giving him hope for the future.
“Playing the piano transports me to another dimension. After losing my vision, music has been one thing that has kept me alive. It opened a window to see the world. It gives me energy and hope to go forward,” said Jamir, reflecting on the profound impact music has had on his life.
Despite facing challenges, Jamir, 27, continues to pursue his passion for music. He plays by ear and is entirely self-taught, with the aid of YouTube tutorials that he started following in 2020. Dreaming of becoming a professional musician, Jamir highlighted the obstacles in finding an institute that caters to the visually impaired.
Originating from Kohima, a town in Nagaland, Jamir recently mesmerised the audience at the Brillante Piano Festival in Bengaluru, Karnataka. His performance of Nocturne in B Flat Minor by composer Frederic Chopin showcased his talent and deep emotional connection to music.
Expressing his admiration for Chopin and his aspirations to explore modern and fusion jazz, Jamir’s dedication and love for music are truly inspiring. Despite the challenges he faces, Jamir remains positive and sees his story as a source of inspiration for others.
“I sometimes wish I could see. But after all these years, I have accepted my fate as God’s plan for me. He wants to use me as a tool to inspire and motivate others. If a blind man can do it, why can’t others who are fully able?” shared Jamir.
Travelling over 3,000 kilometers with his sister by his side, Jamir’s journey to the festival symbolised his unwavering determination and passion for music. With his white cane in hand and his sister’s support, Jamir took to the stage, captivating the audience with his soul-stirring performance.
As part of the “Specially Abled Musicians” programme, Jamir’s participation at the Brillante Piano Festival not only showcased his musical talent but also highlighted the transformative power of music in creating social impact. His story serves as a reminder of the extraordinary strength and resilience that can emerge from pursuing one’s passion despite adversities.
