Iran has launched missiles at Israel following warnings from White House officials about an imminent ‘ballistic missile attack’ in the region. The missile strike comes after a series of deadly Israeli air raids in Beirut, Lebanon’s capital. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) initiated a “limited, localised” operation targeting Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon on Monday night.
Ballistic missiles are rocket-powered missiles capable of covering more than 5,500 kilometres when fired at “intercontinental range.” These missiles can also be launched at medium-range (1,000–3,000 kilometres) and intermediate-range (3,000–5,500 kilometres). Typically used for strategic long-range attacks, ballistic missiles can carry conventional or nuclear warheads. They are propelled at a high arc trajectory towards the target and descend unpowered and unguided.
According to the Missile Defence Advocacy Alliance, a short-range ballistic missile can create an explosive damage radius of up to 1.06 kilometres, potentially causing over 77,000 casualties in urban areas. The escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has led to increased tensions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended the incursion into southern Lebanon, referring to it as a part of a campaign against Iran’s “axis of evil.” He urged unity in facing the challenges ahead.
Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, has expressed concerns over the situation, calling it one of the most perilous phases in Lebanon’s history. The ongoing violence has resulted in approximately 1,000 deaths, 6,000 injuries, and one million people displaced from their homes in Lebanon due to Israeli attacks. In addition, Israeli military actions have continued in the Gaza Strip, with significant casualties reported over the past year.
The reported missile launch by Iran adds to the volatility in the region, as air raid sirens sound across Israel.
