Disabled BBC journalist Frank Gardner found himself in a distressing situation during a recent flight from Warsaw when he was compelled to crawl along the floor of the aircraft to access the toilet. Gardner, a well-known security correspondent for the BBC, shared his experience on social media, expressing his disappointment at the lack of onboard wheelchairs on the LOT Polish airline flight.
Gardner, who became a wheelchair user in 2004 after a life-threatening incident while on assignment in Saudi Arabia, highlighted the discriminatory nature of the airline’s policy that made it difficult for passengers with mobility challenges. Despite praising the cabin crew for their assistance, Gardner made it clear that he would avoid flying with LOT until they improved their accessibility measures.
While the LOT website states that onboard wheelchairs are available on their long-haul flights operated by Boeing 787s, the Polish airline acknowledged the absence of this facility on their short-haul fleet. In response to Gardner’s experience, LOT issued a statement apologising for the inconvenience caused and emphasising their commitment to enhancing accessibility for all passengers.
This is not the first time Frank Gardner has faced accessibility issues while travelling. In a previous incident in 2022, he criticised airline Iberia and UK airports for inadequate assistance upon arrival. Disability equality charity Scope’s director of strategy, James Taylor, emphasised the need for stronger regulations and penalties to ensure that disabled travellers are provided with the necessary support and dignity during their journeys.
As Gardner continues to advocate for improved accessibility in air travel, his experiences shed light on the challenges faced by many passengers with disabilities.
