In preparation for Guy Fawkes night, Scotland is set to implement firework control zones (FCZs) in parts of Glasgow and Edinburgh. These restrictions follow the granting of new powers to councils to regulate firework usage. Glasgow City Council is currently discussing the possibility of a city-wide ban, with a consultation running until October 20.
The first designated FCZ in Glasgow will be in Pollokshields, where the ban will be in effect from November 1 to 10, covering both public and private spaces. Pollokshields, with a population of around 12,000, was chosen due to past instances of serious firework-related anti-social behavior.
In Edinburgh, FCZs will be introduced in areas such as Niddrie, Balerno, Seafield, and Calton Hill. Last year, Edinburgh experienced disturbances on Bonfire Night leading to multiple charges. Although there was a proposal to enforce FCZs across the whole city, councillors voted against it, with Police Scotland responsible for enforcement.
The introduction of FCZs follows the passing of the Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles Act in 2022, making it an offence to use fireworks within these zones, with potential fines of up to £5,000 or six months in prison. The Scottish Government views this legislation as a significant step towards changing Scotland’s relationship with fireworks, despite criticism from the Scottish Conservatives.
Local authorities now have the power to restrict firework use in specific areas, aiming to reduce anti-social behavior and ensure public safety during firework-related events. This move signifies a shift towards responsible firework usage for community welfare and enjoyment.
