A Virginia preschool is using an innovative approach to teach young children about democracy by engaging them in a fun and interactive voting exercise inspired by the popular children’s show “PAW Patrol”. While lawmakers were deliberating on a budget deal at the U.S. Capitol, preschoolers at the ACCA Child Development Center were busy casting their votes for the best character on the show.
In a classroom filled with 3-and-4-year-old students, the kids enthusiastically participated in a voting process to decide between Chase, a German shepherd in a police uniform, and Skye, a female character known for her pink “pup pack”. The children scribbled their names in crayon beneath pictures of the two characters, with the votes resulting in a tie of five to five.
Although these young children are years away from participating in actual elections, the preschool aims to introduce them to civics education early on to foster good citizenship and strengthen democratic values. The focus at this stage is not on complex political structures but on teaching children how to navigate interpersonal relationships, manage emotions, and consider others’ perspectives.
Teachers believe that instilling values of social democracy in preschoolers, such as respecting each member of a group and valuing diverse opinions, lays a strong foundation for building a more cohesive and empathetic society in the future. Through engaging activities and granting children autonomy in decision-making, preschools like ACCA aim to empower youngsters to recognize the importance of their voices and contributions.
At ACCA, where many students are first-generation Americans, efforts are made to cultivate a sense of belonging and American identity among the children. By creating inclusive environments and celebrating events like Fourth of July, the school seeks to equip children with the resilience and understanding needed to navigate a diverse and sometimes discriminatory world.
The preschool’s executive director, María-Isabel Ballivian, believes that politicians can learn valuable lessons from observing preschool activities focused on empathy, cooperation, and inclusivity. By nurturing these qualities in young children, educators hope to shape a generation of future leaders who prioritize the well-being of others and work towards a more harmonious future.
