Israel has launched an invasion into Lebanon, sparking a major escalation in the regional conflict as Iran retaliated by unleashing hundreds of missiles towards Israeli cities. The missile attacks forced millions of Israelis to seek shelter in bomb shelters as sirens blared across the country. The Israeli military, in response, scrambled to intercept the Iranian rockets with air defence missiles over cities like Tel Aviv, Ashdod, and Jerusalem.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quickly ushered into a security meeting in a secure bunker near Jerusalem to strategise a response to the widespread assault. The Israeli Air Forces vowed to protect civilians from further attacks, asserting readiness for both defensive and offensive measures. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for firing the missiles in response to the assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, Ismail Haniyeh and Hassan Nasrallah.
Hezbollah had previously fired at Tel Aviv, prompting White House officials to warn of an imminent Iranian attack. The situation led Israel to impose new restrictions on public gatherings and closed beaches to mitigate further threats. As the conflict escalated, the Israeli military conducted targeted raids on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, marking a significant development in the ongoing conflict.
The incursion into Lebanon signifies the first such operation since the 2006 war with Hezbollah and only the fourth instance of Israel invading its neighbour in over 75 years. The airstrikes in Lebanon have caused devastation, with reports of civilian casualties and displacements. The escalating conflict has raised fears among residents, with concerns about security and stability gripping the region.
Efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah have so far been unsuccessful, with the situation showing no signs of immediate de-escalation.
