Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, has recently made his first public statement since being released, stating, ‘I pled guilty to journalism.’ Assange, who was released in June after spending five years in a British prison, had pleaded guilty to obtaining and publishing U.S. military secrets as part of a deal with Justice Department prosecutors, ultimately concluding a lengthy legal battle. Prior to his time in prison, he had been in self-imposed exile at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for seven years, where he sought asylum on grounds of political persecution.
During his public statement, Assange expressed his observation of a global effort to criminalise journalism. He stated, ‘I am not free today because the system worked. I am free today after years of incarceration because I pled guilty to journalism.’ He emphasised his commitment to seeking and sharing information from sources and informing the public of such information. Assange’s wife, Stella, mentioned his need to focus on regaining his health and well-being after the extended period of confinement, also highlighting their two children, whom Assange had only known within prison walls.
Assange raised concerns about freedom of expression facing challenges, calling for a united commitment to safeguard essential human liberties. Moreover, Assange accused the former CIA director Mike Pompeo of orchestrating plans to ‘kidnap and assassinate’ him during his stay at the Ecuadorian Embassy, claiming retaliation for WikiLeaks’ exposure of CIA surveillance activities.
Following his release and return to Australia in June, Assange detailed the campaign of retribution against him by CIA officials under Pompeo’s direction.
