The chair of multiple major maternity scandal inquiries has expressed support for The Independent’s campaign advocating for “vital” refuge housing. The Independent has introduced the “Brick by Brick” campaign in collaboration with Refuge, aiming to secure funding for the construction of essential housing for victims of domestic abuse.
Donna Ockenden, currently leading the Nottingham maternity inquiry and a former midwife herself, is the latest figure to endorse the campaign. She emphasised the critical need for women to have a safe haven to turn to in times of crisis. Ockenden stated, “Both in my previous clinical roles in the NHS and in Nottingham, it is absolutely vital that women can rely upon a safe place to go.” She wholeheartedly supports the campaign and adds her voice to the cause.
Ockenden is conducting an investigation into maternity services at Nottingham University Hospital, a case that could potentially be one of the most significant maternity scandals in history. Previously, she chaired the Shrewsbury maternity inquiry, which uncovered numerous instances of poor maternity care resulting in harm to hundreds of women and children under the care of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust.
The Brick by Brick campaign has already raised £100,000 since its inception. Notable personalities such as Victoria Derbyshire, Rylan Clark, Cherie Blair, Dame Helen Mirren, and Olivia Colman have lent their support to the cause. The Independent has partnered with Refuge, a charity dedicated to aiding victims of domestic abuse by providing shelter and assistance.
Statistics show that on average, one woman in England and Wales is killed by a partner or former partner every five days. Refuge receives a distress call for help every two minutes. The refuge being constructed will incorporate advanced security measures, including a fire-proof letterbox, CCTV surveillance, and reinforced locks on windows and doors. It will also be connected to the local police force to ensure swift response in the unlikely event that an abuser locates the victim.
The call to action encourages donations towards the Brick by Brick campaign to support the construction of a secure space for women to escape domestic abuse, rebuild their lives, and create new futures.
