Online GP appointments hit all time high in August, NHS data shows

Online GP appointments reached a record high in August, as per data from the NHS. The surge in virtual consultations saw one in 20 patients opting for online or video appointments. Senior doctors noted that remote consultations are often more convenient for patients, but they emphasized the importance of accommodating requests for face-to-face appointments.

The rise in online appointments has been notable, with figures showing a steady increase from 1% in May 2023 to 5.2% in August this year. This increase has been accompanied by a decline in face-to-face consultations. In October 2023, 70.8% of GP appointments were in person, which then dropped to 64.8% by August 2024, the lowest figure since June 2022. Phone consultations remained consistent at 26.1% in August over the past 12 months.

Dr. Rachel Ward, a GP and member of the Rebuild General Practice campaign group, highlighted the strain on GPs, who provided 27.6 million appointments in August alone. The issue, she mentioned, is not just about online appointments but also about the availability of an adequate number of GPs to meet patient demand.

Professor Kamila Hawthorne, the chair of the Royal College of GPs, supported a mixed approach combining remote and in-person consultations. While acknowledging the convenience and safety of remote care, Prof Hawthorne stressed the importance of GPs having access to reliable technology for online appointments.

A spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care emphasized the commitment to providing patients with options for both face-to-face and digital consultations. The aim is to enhance primary care by integrating digital solutions where suitable, ensuring patients receive timely and efficient care.

The data reflects a shifting landscape in healthcare delivery, with advancements in technology playing a significant role in shaping how patients access primary care services. As the healthcare sector continues to evolve, the emphasis remains on ensuring that patients receive the care they require while adapting to the changing preferences and needs of the population.
