The timing of the disaster couldn’t have been worse, occurring just before Nepal’s major festival, Dasain, set to commence on Thursday. The festival holds great cultural significance, with people travelling back to their hometowns to celebrate with their families. However, with significant damage to the roads, many may find their travel plans disrupted.
The government has affirmed its commitment to assisting those stranded and who have been displaced from their homes by the flooding and landslides. The Nepal police have reported a death toll of 217, alongside 143 people sustaining injuries. Additionally, 28 individuals remain unaccounted for, prompting ongoing search efforts to locate them.
Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, who had been attending the U.N. General Assembly meeting, swiftly returned home to oversee the emergency response. An urgent Cabinet meeting was convened to coordinate the government’s relief efforts. The police and army have been collaborating on rescue operations, with heavy machinery deployed to clear the debris obstructing the roads.
In light of the situation, schools and colleges have been closed to facilitate the clean-up process and provide students with the opportunity to recover. The heavy rainfall in recent days marked the culmination of Nepal’s monsoon season, which typically spans from June through mid-September.
