Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez uses iconic Leonardo DiCaprio video to quash F1 retirement talk

Mexican driver Sergio Perez has light-heartedly responded to rumours about his potential retirement from Formula 1 by posting a video clip featuring Leonardo DiCaprio’s famous line, “I’m not leaving,” from the movie The Wolf of Wall Street, on social media.

Perez recently extended his contract with Red Bull until the end of the 2025 F1 season, with an option for 2026. Despite this, speculations about his future in the sport have persisted due to his inconsistent performance, currently trailing his teammate Max Verstappen by 187 points.

Reports had suggested that the 34-year-old could announce his retirement at the Mexico City Grand Prix on 27 October. However, in response to these rumours, Perez shared the DiCaprio video with the caption “Sorry,” conveying a clear message that he does not plan on leaving the sport anytime soon.

Although Perez has not secured a race win since April 2023, he finished second in the previous season’s drivers’ standings behind Verstappen. Currently positioned eighth in this year’s rankings, Perez received support from Red Bull team principal Christian Horner before the summer break, indicating his place for the rest of the 2024 season.

The recent promotion of Liam Lawson to a race seat at Red Bull’s sister team, replacing Daniel Ricciardo for the remaining six races, adds pressure on Perez to deliver strong performances. If New Zealand driver Lawson impresses, he could be considered for a Red Bull seat in the upcoming season.

After describing his Singapore Grand Prix as a “complete disaster” following his 10th-place finish, Perez will aim to bounce back at the upcoming United States Grand Prix in Austin on 20 October. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, Perez’s humourous response affirms his determination to continue competing in Formula 1 and dispels any retirement talk surrounding him.
