Sir Keir Starmer has initiated talks to reset Britain’s relationship with the European Union by focusing on youth mobility as he heads to Brussels. The Prime Minister aims to address defense and security, crime and immigration, and trade through a three-pillar strategy during the crucial discussions with EU leaders.
While there is pressure for a youth mobility scheme that allows under-30s to travel freely between the UK and the EU, Sir Keir’s senior negotiator, European affairs minister Nick Thomas-Symonds, is cautious about agreeing too quickly. The UK government sees the EU’s interest in the project as a potential bargaining chip.
Ahead of his trip, Sir Keir emphasised the importance of close collaboration with international partners, especially in the face of conflicts and security threats in Europe. He stressed the need to move past the Brexit era and establish a more constructive relationship with the EU for the benefit of British citizens.
During his discussions with top EU officials including European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and European Council president Charles Michel, Sir Keir will outline his vision for future cooperation. While ruling out a return to the single market, customs union, or freedom of movement, he aims to focus on enhancing security, securing borders, and addressing trade barriers.
Despite the government’s stance, pro-EU groups advocate for progress, particularly in implementing a youth mobility scheme. They argue that such a scheme would offer young Britons valuable opportunities that were lost due to Brexit, enabling them to experience different cultures and languages while studying, working, or travelling in Europe.
Cal Roscow, director of campaigns at Best for Britain, highlighted the broad support for a youth mobility scheme across different demographics in the UK. He called upon the government to seize the opportunity to restore these enriching experiences for young people in Britain, especially given the European Commission’s willingness to cooperate on the initiative.
As discussions between Sir Keir Starmer and EU leaders progress, the focus remains on strengthening ties, enhancing cooperation, and addressing shared challenges while navigating the complexities of post-Brexit relations.
