Trump’s fired military guru says he doubts the Republican nominee can broker peace between Ukraine and Russia

Former White House national security adviser HR McMaster has cast doubt on Donald Trump’s assertions that he could swiftly negotiate peace between Ukraine and Russia, referring to it as a “myth” during an interview with CBS News’ ‘Face the Nation’. McMaster, who served as Trump’s national security adviser from 2017 to 2018, expressed skepticism about the feasibility of brokering peace without first achieving military success in the conflict.

In the interview, McMaster emphasised the importance of demonstrating resolve to support Ukraine’s defence efforts against Russian aggression as a means to pressure President Putin towards a favourable settlement. He highlighted the necessity of convincing Putin that Russia is losing the war in order to make progress towards peace in the region.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that he could facilitate peace talks between Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky, even before taking office. However, McMaster’s perspective challenges this assertion and underscores the complexities involved in achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The retired general, who is currently promoting his book ‘At War With Ourselves’ reflecting on his tenure in the Trump administration, has a background as a prolific military strategist with a critical perspective on war aims. McMaster’s insights provide a nuanced view on the challenges of navigating the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, countering simplistic claims of immediate peace negotiations.

As discussions around potential peace agreements continue, McMaster’s stance serves as a reminder of the multifaceted considerations and strategic actions necessary to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. His comments reflect a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in resolving such disputes and underscore the importance of comprehensive approaches that encompass both military and diplomatic efforts.
