WhatsApp users will soon have the ability to conceal their backgrounds during video calls, thanks to a new update announced by the messaging platform. This feature will allow users to add various backdrops to their video calls, similar to what is already available on platforms like Zoom.
The update also introduces new filters that users can apply to their own video feed, such as turning it black and white or adjusting for low light conditions. Additionally, there is a “touch up” option that aims to enhance the appearance of users by smoothing skin and making other adjustments, a feature already present on Zoom.
According to WhatsApp, these new features are designed to make conversations “feel fun and expressive”. The ten available backdrops include options like Blur, Living room, Office, Cafe, Pebbles, Foodie, Smoosh, Beach, Sunset, Celebration, and Forest. Similarly, there are ten filters to choose from, including Warm, Cool, Black & White, Light leak, Dreamy, Prism light, Fisheye, Vintage TV, Frosted glass, and Duo tone.
Users can utilise these filters and backdrops during both individual and group video calls. To access them, users can simply select the icon at the top right of the video call screen, which will then display a menu with a range of filter and backdrop options.
WhatsApp has stated that this update will be rolled out to all users in the upcoming weeks, allowing them to enhance the look and feel of their video calls. This move is intended to offer users more ways to express themselves and make their conversations more vibrant and enjoyable.
