A 15-year-old has been arrested and charged with murder for allegedly shooting a US Postal Service worker in Chicago back in July. This arrest follows closely after another incident where a man in Michigan threatened a postal worker with a knife. The teenager, whose identity has not been disclosed by authorities, is accused of shooting postal worker Octavia Redmond, 48, and fleeing the scene in a stolen vehicle.
According to the US Postal Inspection Service, Redmond succumbed to her injuries after the attack. Ruth M. Mendonça, the Chicago division inspector in charge, condemned the violence, stating, “There is no place for this senseless violence.” She reassured that postal inspectors will relentlessly pursue justice for the victims, their families, and the postal community. Redmond, remembered as a wife, mother, and dedicated postal worker, has been described as a pillar in the community by her loved ones.
Following a joint effort by the Chicago Police Department and the US Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, the teenage suspect was apprehended in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Monday. The individual appeared in juvenile court the next day and has been remanded in custody. The court date for the teen has been set for November 1, with legal representation yet to be confirmed.
In another recent incident, a 61-year-old man from Michigan, Russell Frank Valleu, was charged with threatening a Black woman postal worker with a knife. The attack reportedly stemmed from his anger over political mail related to Kamala Harris. Valleu has a history of criminal offences, including aggravated stalking, domestic violence, and illegal possession of firearms. The prosecutor in the case highlighted the racist nature of the attack and condemned any form of assault or threat based on race or profession.
Both incidents underscore the need for safety and security for postal workers who provide essential services to communities across the country.
