Britons Return from Lebanon on First Flight Chartered by UK Government
In the midst of escalating conflict in the Middle East, the first charter flight carrying British citizens out of Lebanon has taken off. More charter flights have been arranged for this week following Israel’s ground offensive into southern Lebanon against the Iran-backed Hezbollah. This offensive comes after more than a week of heavy bombardment in the region. The Israeli military has urged people to evacuate around 50 villages and towns across southern Lebanon due to intense clashes with Hezbollah forces.
Lebanese authorities report that nearly 2,000 people have been killed in Lebanon in the past year, with around 1.2 million people displaced from their homes. The majority of these deaths occurred in the past two weeks. With an estimated 4,000 to 6,000 Brits in Lebanon, many have faced challenges booking flights out of the country due to cancellations and soaring prices.
Amidst this turmoil, the UK government has stepped in by chartering a flight to bring hundreds of Britons back home at a cost of £350 per head. Foreign Secretary David Lammy confirmed the departure of the first charter flight, with additional flights planned for the coming days as long as demand persists and conditions remain safe.
Defence Secretary John Healey met with British troops deployed to Cyprus to prepare for a potential evacuation of UK nationals from Lebanon. Stressing the importance of ensuring the safety of nationals, Mr. Healey highlighted the readiness of the troops for any required action. He also emphasized the need to prevent the conflict from escalating into a wider regional war.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, speaking in Brussels before talks with EU officials, echoed the call for de-escalation and a political solution to the crisis in the Middle East. As tensions continue to rise in the region, the UK government remains actively engaged in efforts to support its citizens and promote peace in the area.
