Sabrina Carpenter Hits Back at Critics Disapproving Her Tour Outfits: ‘Don’t Attend’
Sabrina Carpenter has responded boldly to critics who have voiced disapproval of her Short N’ Sweet tour costumes. During an interview with Time magazine, where she was featured as one of the 2024 Time100 Next artists, the 25-year-old singer advised her fashion critics to refrain from attending her shows if they are not content with her wardrobe choices. She stated firmly, “To that I just say, don’t come to the show, and that’s OK,” in the article dated October 2.
From a Swarovski crystal-adorned two-piece ensemble by French designer Ludovic de Saint Sernin to a shimmering bodice with matching garters, and a black lace catsuit by Patou, the “Please Please Please” artist has showcased an array of flirtatious, feminine fashion onstage in front of her enthusiastic audiences. Despite the outfits being styled and selected by Jared Ellner to complement her allure and sensuous ballads, some concert attendees and viewers have expressed discontent with her choices.
However, Carpenter chooses to tune out the negative chatter by recalling how her idols such as Madonna, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Beyoncé utilized fashion as a tool for boosting self-confidence while performing. The artist acknowledged, “It’s unfortunate that it’s ever been something to criticize because truthfully, the scariest thing in the world is getting up on a stage in front of that many people and having to perform as if it’s nothing.”
For Carpenter, the negligees, feathers, and flowing chiffon robes contribute to her current image, embodying the femininity that she has always embraced. Transitioning from her previous concert appearances during the Emails I Can’t Send and Eras Tour, which featured a more playful, Bratz-inspired style, she now exudes a newfound sense of confidence with daring and revealing outfit choices. She expressed, “If right now that means corsets and garter belts and fuzzy robes or whatever the f-ck, then that’s what that means.”
Unlike her past performances, the former Disney Channel star has been able to flaunt fresh variations of her custom-made outfits for the Short N’ Sweet tour. In the past, Carpenter’s wardrobe options were limited, often having to recycle a few outfits even if they were damaged or worn. She revealed, “In the past it would be like, if that outfit has stains on it, good luck.”
Working closely with celebrity stylist Jared Ellner, Carpenter has displayed a range of custom looks on the red carpet and magazine covers, notably her ensemble at the 2024 MTV VMAs, which paid homage to Madonna’s strapless studded Oscars gown from 1991.
