Cancer showed me who ‘my true friends are’ – Amy Dowden highlights pain of friendship shifts during cancer

Cancer diagnosis reveals true friends, says Amy Dowden

Amy Dowden, a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing, shared her experience of battling breast cancer and how it impacted her friendships. The 34-year-old, who recently returned to the show, expressed that going through cancer made her realise who her true friends and supportive family are, highlighting the importance of their presence during tough times.

Reflecting on her journey, Dowden expressed gratitude towards those who stood by her and went above and beyond to offer help and comfort. She also shared her disappointment in friends who seemed distant during her diagnosis, noting that it was a painful experience to feel abandoned by those she considered close.

Dowden, who chronicled her challenges and triumphs in her memoir “Dancing in the Rain,” emphasised the significance of surrounding oneself with supportive and caring individuals, as they play a crucial role in navigating through the toughest of times.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins this October, a psychologist specialising in cancer support shed light on the common phenomenon of friendship shifts that individuals often experience when dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Robin Muir, a clinical psychologist for cancer support charity Maggie’s, highlighted the emotional turmoil and adjustment process that cancer patients go through as they discover who their true friends are.

Muir addressed the taboo nature of discussing cancer and how it can lead to friends and family members struggling to offer adequate support due to their own fears and uncertainties. He stressed the importance of creating safe spaces for open communication and understanding, rather than trying to provide solutions or fix the situation.

Offering a comforting reminder, Muir stated that it is perfectly normal not to have all the right words to say to someone battling cancer. Simply being present, listening attentively, and acknowledging the difficulties faced by the individual can make a significant difference in offering genuine support and comfort during such challenging times.

Overall, Dowden’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of cancer on friendships and the importance of compassion, empathy, and genuine connection in supporting loved ones through their cancer journey.
