New research from Broadband Genie has revealed that many Brits simply plug in their routers and leave them untouched. This leads to unchanged passwords and a lack of crucial software updates. A survey of over 3,000 UK web users found that nine out of ten admitted they had never updated their router firmware. Additionally, most users confessed they had never changed the administrator password, as reported by the Express.
This lack of security makes broadband an easy target for cybercriminals. Many respondents cited a lack of understanding of the necessity to alter factory settings. Another alarming statistic is that many people never verify the devices connected to their network, potentially allowing unauthorized access and slowing down connections.
Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offer apps to test speeds, Wi-Fi signals, and provide an inventory of connected devices. This can help users identify and prevent unauthorized devices from accessing their network. Oliver Devane, Senior Security Researcher at McAfee, stressed the importance of adjusting router settings for better security. He highlighted that default settings can be exploited by cybercriminals and emphasized the need to keep firmware up to date with security patches.
Devane also advised changing the default router password to restrict access to authorized users only. Many internet users are unaware of the risks associated with routers, indicating a need for increased awareness and education on basic security measures.
