A young woman was punched by a furious pedestrian after trying to defend her father during a road rage incident. Jessica Lound, in her 20s, was attacked by Lee Hale when she jumped to her father’s aid as Hale attempted to pull him out of his car window, a court was told. The incident occurred as Jessica and her father, Adrian, were driving home from work in Warrington on March 17 this year. Hale, a construction worker, was walking his own daughter when he suddenly stepped in front of their vehicle, causing Mr. Lound to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting him.
In response to the near collision, Mr. Lound shouted at Hale from the car window, triggering an aggressive reaction from the pedestrian who proceeded to attack him. Jessica intervened in the scuffle, only to be punched by Hale during the altercation. Although she emerged from the brawl unharmed, Hale’s daughter sustained a black eye in the commotion. The incident led to a court case where Hale denied assaulting Jessica and using threatening behaviour but was ultimately convicted after a trial.
As part of his sentencing, Hale was ordered to complete a year-long community order, fined £180, and instructed to pay £439 in costs and a victim surcharge. During the court proceedings, Ms. Lound and her father opted not to testify. In Hale’s defence, his lawyer Gary Heaven argued that the pedestrian believed he was walking at a pedestrian crossing and felt that his daughter was at risk due to Mr. Lound’s driving behaviors. Although Hale denied punching Mr. Lound through the window, the court accepted evidence of a physical confrontation between the two men.
Overall, the court found that Hale’s actions constituted excessive self-defence, leading to his conviction. Despite the physical altercation, Jessica Lound did not sustain any injuries. Gary Heaven stated, “We are not at the state of affairs where we have a defendant with a string of convictions for violence. He has to concede he carried on a verbal argument. What was clear was that Mr. Lound was giving it large as far as the verbals were concerned. Overall it was an unseemly business, and my client has to accept that.”
The incident serves as a reminder of the escalating tensions that can arise from road rage incidents and the potential for swift and violent reactions in such situations. Such confrontations highlight the need for caution and restraint to prevent conflicts from spiralling out of control on the roads.
