Dog trainer’s top tips to curb annoying barking – including one golden rule

Dog Trainer Shares Top Tips to Control Excessive Barking

Dog trainer Jack from Dovecote Dogs has revealed some straightforward yet effective strategies to address your furry friend’s incessant barking, along with a crucial golden rule that all dog owners should adhere to.

Dogs have a tendency to bark at seemingly trivial things such as shadows, leaves, or even a misplaced slipper, which can be quite exasperating. While barking is a natural behaviour for dogs to communicate and alert their owners to potential dangers, it is essential for their socialisation and overall development. Despite the importance of acknowledging a dog’s barking, it is equally vital for owners to be able to command their dogs to stop barking, a task that can be challenging for some. Therefore, a dog trainer has stepped in to offer some concise tips to help owners curb their dog’s barking and the essential golden rule to follow for a well-behaved canine.

Taking to TikTok, Jack from Dovecote Dogs highlighted that many people tend to react improperly when their dog is incessantly barking. He pointed out that shouting commands at a barking dog while facing the same direction as the dog can lead to miscommunication, as the dog perceives it as though the owner is also barking at the same thing. To address this issue, Jack introduced a three-step approach to tackle excessive barking effectively.

The first tip provided by Jack is to “break their eye contact”. By positioning oneself in front of the dog and maintaining direct eye contact, the communication becomes clearer for the dog. Following this, Jack emphasised the golden rule of consistency in choosing a command, whether it’s “quiet” or “enough”, and waiting for a brief pause in the barking to issue the command. This approach aims to associate the command with silence rather than barking.

Furthermore, Jack recommended rewarding the dog after successfully following the command, as a form of positive reinforcement. By offering a reward in the opposite direction to what they were barking at, it helps reinforce positive behaviour and encourages disengagement from the triggering stimulus.

The practicality and effectiveness of these tips have impressed many viewers, with some sharing their own experiences of dealing with noisy dogs. By implementing these simple yet insightful strategies, dog owners can work towards creating a peaceful and well-behaved environment for both themselves and their furry companions.
