A drug dealer was apprehended by police in Paisley after they observed him taking an “unusual route” through the streets. Thomas Barclay, 38, was stopped by officers on April 29 last year as he drove through various streets in a manner that suggested he was not familiar with the area. When his BMW was pulled over for a routine check, Barclay appeared extremely nervous and was sweating profusely.
Upon inspecting Barclay’s mobile phone, police found messages indicating his involvement in the distribution of cocaine, including references to a ‘menu’ of drugs and the presence of “drivers out all weekend”. Prosecutor Matt Piskorz recounted to Paisley Sheriff Court that officers noticed Barclay sitting in his BMW parked outside a property in Orchy Crescent with the engine running late on a Saturday night. Barclay then proceeded to drive slowly through several nearby streets, prompting suspicions from the officers.
As police approached the vehicle with their emergency lights and siren activated, they saw Barclay quickly lean over to the front passenger footwell and seemingly place an item there. A search of the vehicle uncovered a zip lock bag containing 0.8g of cocaine in the footwell. In total, 66 press-seal plastic bags of cocaine were seized, with an estimated value of £1,720. Additionally, £580 in cash was found in the car along with two mobile phones.
An examination of Barclay’s iPhone revealed incriminating messages related to the sale and supply of controlled substances, including a ‘menu’ detailing various drugs and prices. Barclay was arrested, taken to Greenock police station, and made no reply to the caution and charge. His partner, Natalie Sloan, who was a passenger in the BMW, faced a charge related to the supply of cocaine, but her not guilty plea was accepted by the Crown.
During the court proceedings, the defence solicitor requested background reports and reserved mitigating factors for Barclay. Sheriff Amel Elfallah acknowledged the seriousness of the offence and ordered reports to be prepared. Sentencing was deferred until October 29 for the completion of a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment. Barclay, residing in Rutherglen, had his bail continued, while the Crown successfully moved for the forfeiture of the seized cash amounting to £580.
