Early Reaction to Utah Hockey Club Strong as it Enters Crowded Salt Lake Market
The Utah Jazz have long been a staple in Salt Lake City, drawing sellout crowds and establishing themselves as an institution in the city. Despite the team going through rebuilding phases, they have managed to retain a loyal fan base. However, the arrival of the team formerly known as the Arizona Coyotes has sparked significant interest in the city, with over 34,000 season-ticket deposits received in just 48 hours.
Owned by Ryan and Ashley Smith, who also own the Utah Jazz, the new Utah Hockey Club has seen an overwhelming response from the community. Chris Barney, President of Revenue and Commercial Strategy at Smith Entertainment Group, noted that a large percentage of season-ticket depositors for the hockey club were entirely new to arena events, indicating a fresh audience eager to engage with the sport.
While the Jazz have successfully cultivated a young fan base through programs like Junior Jazz, the Utah Hockey Club aims to follow suit by bolstering existing hockey programs in the region. With the Utah Outliers junior team already enjoying success, there are plans to expand the youth program with the anticipation that having an NHL team nearby will further ignite interest among aspiring young players.
In addition to nurturing new fans, the Utah Hockey Club is focused on educating and engaging those less familiar with the sport of hockey. Plans are in place to ensure games are televised and streamed, providing a platform for both newcomers and seasoned hockey enthusiasts to enjoy the sport.
General manager Bill Armstrong has assembled a young and promising roster for the Utah Hockey Club, with key players like Clayton Keller leading the team. While there is cautious optimism about the team’s performance in the upcoming season, Armstrong emphasises a day-to-day approach as they gear up to face the Chicago Blackhawks in their opening game on October 8th.
Despite the excitement surrounding the new NHL team, Salt Lake City boasts a bustling sports scene with strong followings for college teams like BYU and Utah, as well as MLS club Real Salt Lake. The challenge for the Utah Hockey Club will be to maintain the initial enthusiasm and support from fans as they embark on their inaugural season.
As the Utah Hockey Club prepares to make its mark on the Salt Lake market, there is a blend of anticipation and optimism among fans and officials alike. With the potential to further elevate the city’s status as a sports hub, all eyes are on the ice as the new team takes its first strides towards establishing a lasting legacy in the community.
