Five Chinese nationals are facing charges for allegedly attempting to conceal their nighttime visit to a military site in Michigan, as reported by The Independent. The individuals, who were University of Michigan students at the time, were accused of misleading investigators and trying to erase photos from their phones related to the incident.
The events unfolded more than a year ago when the five individuals were discovered near Camp Grayling during summer drills in August 2023. While they were not charged for their actions at the military site, they faced allegations of providing false information to authorities and engaging in a conspiracy to delete evidence, according to a federal court complaint.
The FBI highlighted concerns about Chinese college students capturing images of sensitive defense locations in the U.S., underscoring the gravity of the situation. Despite the charges, the whereabouts of the accused individuals remain undisclosed, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit warning that they will be arrested if they come into contact with American authorities.
During the initial encounter in 2023, the five individuals were approached by a sergeant major from the Utah National Guard near a lake after midnight. Claiming to be part of the media, they later left the area peacefully but aroused suspicions due to their activities. Subsequent investigations revealed that they had booked accommodation at a nearby motel prior to the incident, adding to the mystery surrounding their motives.
One of the individuals, who attempted to travel to South Korea and China months later, was flagged by border officers at Detroit airport. Despite initially claiming a stargazing trip as the reason for their visit to northern Michigan, an examination of his electronic devices uncovered military-related images from the same night they were confronted by the National Guard.
The remaining four individuals were interrogated in Chicago after arriving from Iceland and maintained that they were in Michigan to witness a meteor shower. Their discussions on WeChat about deleting photos from their devices further raised suspicions about their involvement in attempts to conceal the nature of their activities.
All five individuals graduated last spring from the University of Michigan, having participated in a partnership program with Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. The case underscores the increasing scrutiny over potential espionage activities and the importance of safeguarding sensitive military installations from unauthorized access.
