The Great British Bake Off contestant, Jeff, who made the dramatic decision to quit the latest series after just two episodes, has expressed his gratitude for the show in a heartfelt letter. The episode on Tuesday was filled with tension as two other contestants collapsed during the final showstopper challenge of ‘biscuit week’. Jeff, a former university lecturer, had been struggling with illness since ‘cake week’ in the previous episode and ultimately decided to walk away, stating, “I’ve had enough.”
During a conversation with presenter Alison Hammond, the 57-year-old shared that he was feeling unwell for the second consecutive week and declared, “I’m done.” Offering words of support, Hammond consoled Jeff by acknowledging his efforts, saying, “You tried man. You tried.” Jeff later extended his appreciation to the Bake Off experience in a letter posted on the show’s Twitter account. He reflected on the “amazing and challenging experience of a lifetime” and praised the incredible bakers he had the privilege of meeting in series 15.
In his letter, Jeff wrote, “Although I was not able to continue for long, I had the pleasure of meeting all of the incredible bakers from series 15. What a wonderful group of people and they were also excellent bakers.” He concluded with warm regards for the production team, describing them as the “nicest, most hard-working people you will ever come across,” emphasising their support and positivity.
Viewers of the show have conveyed their support for Jeff following his departure, with one fan expressing, “Hope he’s well, he will be missed,” while another commented, “Sad he couldn’t continue – we hardly knew him!” There have even been suggestions for Jeff to potentially return next year, considering his unforeseen illness this season.
The episode also saw further drama unfold as midwife Illiyin, who had impressed the judges in the previous episode, reported feeling dizzy and had to be assisted to the floor by medics. Additionally, contestant Dylan fell off his chair, prompting a light-hearted remark from fellow contestant Andy, “They’re dropping like flies!” Fortunately, it was later clarified that Dylan had not fainted but simply lost his balance while reaching for his water bottle.
The 15th season of the Great British Bake Off, which commenced on 24th September, began with 12 contestants entering the tent for the acclaimed baking competition. The latest developments on the show have left fans eagerly anticipating the upcoming episodes and the challenges that lie ahead for the remaining bakers.
